MONA FORMA, Tasmania, Australia (2024)
The artist, who views the “energy of the earth” as a vital element in his creations, spent time in Nipa Luna / Hobart and its surroundings prior to the performance, drawing inspiration from the local environment and wildlife and researching the island’s endangered species. Chang’s work is deeply rooted in spiritual practices, influenced by Chinese calligraphy and philosophy, Buddhist meditation, and Tai Chi in the martial art movement. Chang says: “When I paint, I move the ink with my mind, mobilise my body with the brush, and use my waist as the axis to drive the limbs, so that my paintings will have the spiritual resonance as smooth as the drifting clouds and the flowing water.”
